About Lochsa Wild and Scenic River

Lochsa Wild and Scenic River

The Lochsa Wild and Scenic River is a protected 70-mile stretch of the Lochsa River located in north-central Idaho, primarily within the Clearwater National Forest. Recognized under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, the Lochsa is celebrated for its outstanding natural, cultural, and recreational values. The river’s course cuts through steep canyons and dense stands of old-growth Douglas-fir and western larch, providing habitat for diverse wildlife such as elk, black bear, bald eagles, and westslope cutthroat trout. Historically, the Lochsa area was home to Native American tribes including the Nez Perce, who hunted and fished along its banks. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, it became an important corridor for miners, loggers, and settlers, but today its value lies in conservation and outdoor recreation. Visitors flock to the Lochsa for whitewater rafting and kayaking with challenging Class III-IV rapids, fishing, and multi-day backpacking. The nearby Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness provides access to remote hiking trails and pristine alpine lakes. Landmarks like Marble Creek Falls and the scenic Lewis and Clark Highway (U.S. Highway 12) run alongside the river, enhancing the visitor experience. The river’s cold, clear water supports healthy fish populations, making it a popular destination for anglers. The Lochsa Wild and Scenic River offers a mix of adventure and solitude, drawing outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers seeking unspoiled landscapes and challenging river experiences.
